Proximity

Proximity is the grouping of objects that are closer to one another into separate groups rather than seeing the objects as a single group. For example, the handles on the cabinets in this picture are closer to one another vertically rather than horizontally, so rather than seeing them as a single arrangement of handles, we see them as two vertical, unrelated rows.
